Sex workers in Kolkata, Only the mud from the residence of a sex worker can make sure that the soul of the goddess is pure

Newcomers to the red light district  of Kolkata will be given a spot demonstration at the unit with the help of a dildo on how to use a condom.
Chumki is one of the 4000 sex workers who will be celebrating the Durga Puja in Sonagachhi this year. “Only we can make sure that the soul of the goddess is pure,” she states, referring to the tradition where idol makers and puja organisers come to Sonagachhi to collect mud from their residence. The mud is considered to be pure and to drive away evil from society. “Our tradition says that a man who enters our rooms becomes pure as he leaves all of his vices behind,” she says.

While some sex workers think that Durga Puja is a celebration of motherhood as they “mother many fathers” throughout the year, others are of the view of blending of puja and pleasure during five days. Special guests of sex workers, usually Babus, have also been invited for dinner. Babus are those who become psychologically involved with a particular sex-worker or share a ‘husband-wife’ relationship.The festive frenzy culminates to a situation that requires extra police on the streets. The red light area falls under the Burtolla police station area.

“We make elaborate police arrangements for the Sonagachhi puja fearing a stampede,” reveals senior inspector of police and former OC of Burtolla police station, B Saha.

Customer Care Unit volunteers will guide clients who want to avail of the services offered between 7 pm and 4 am during the pujas.

Using a condom is mandatory

Condoms like xtratime, xtrapleasure andordinary ones will also be made available at the units,” said Mahesweta Mukherjee, the liaison officer of Durbar Mahila Samanyay Samity.

The Samity, which works for protecting both the sex-workers and customers, has decided to guide those who have little knowledge of contraceptives.

“Newcomers will be given a spot demonstration at the unit with the help of a dildo on how to use a condom. And it’s mandatory,” says Mukherjee, adding they take care of customers facing any problems by hoodlums at the red-light area as the clients are Lakshmi.

Mukherjee, however, makes it clear that the puja committee has nothing to do with the business of sex workers during the pujas. Sonagachhi women perform rigorous rituals going by the book.

Determined to rise above social prohibition and get the power of the Goddess Durga, nearly 4,000 sex-workers of Sonagachhi, one of the largest red-light districts of Asia organise Durga Puja.

Sonagachhi Durga Puja becomes a centre of attraction as sex workers of different age groups from various places pour in at the pandal, said Bhola, a local youth. Children of the sex workers who are usually away from their homes stay with their mothers at Sonagachhi during the pujas.

Retired sex workers have been invited for lunch for five days. Aged sex workers facing acute financial crisis will be given new clothes and money, said Gulti, a local youth also associated with the puja.

Aged sex-workers and young children of sex-workers will be taken pandal hopping. Beggars begging in and around Sonagachhi throughout the year have also been invited for lunch during the pujas.

In a sensational disclosure of 2004, noted Tamil writer Anuradha Ramanan has alleged that Hindu pontiff, Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati attempted to sexually abuse her in 1992. According to specialists, sex addiction can involve a wide variety of practices. A large number of sex addicts say their unacceptable sexual practices have been the result of a gradual process.

It may have started with an unhealthy relationship, but over the years deteriorated to include compulsive behaviour which is frequently damaging.

Psychologist Sujendra Prakash says he’s come across several cases of happily married men who are addicted to sex. “They are rarely caught,”he says. “This may be because they are not celebrities, but social restrictions in our society mean that much is kept under wraps.”

According to him, “Those who display such behaviour are highly insecure people, mostly uncertain of their potency. They are are not good in bed. They indulge in promiscuous sexual activity to keep proving themselves. Their life is a lie and they lie to everybody. It is just like any other personality disorder and cannot be easily overcome.”

Experts also feel that sex addicts gain very little pleasure from actual physical contact. Yet they engage in sexual activities they don’t enjoy because they are trying to alter their own mood, and to anaesthetise painful feelings of low self-esteem or loneliness. “In our society, sex addicts are forced to wear a mask; they may appear harmless, but a lot is going on in their minds,”explains counsellor Ian Faria.

On whether this is a only male pre-occupation, Sujendra Prakash says, “Nymphomania exists more in literature than in the real world. While men are addicted to sex, women are addicted to love. But there are women who are aware that sex is a weak point for men and may use this to their advantage.”

As for solutions, psychologist Karun Mathews says, “Intense counsellings and sessions with psychologists or psychiatrists is recommended.

In the west, Sex Addicts Anonymous, based on the template of Alcoholics Anonymous, has been doing some amazing work.”But unlike alcohol or drug addiction, where the ‘just say no’ mantra is clear-cut, recovering from sexual addiction is not so straightforward.

BHUBANESWAR – A man in Orissa’s Bhadrak district has been arrested for allegedly raping his daughter for over a decade and forcing her to undergo several abortions over the years, police said Monday.

Bishnumohan Panda, a 58-year-old resident of Rajgurupur village, was arrested after his daughter complained to the police Saturday with the help of villagers, said Damodar Mohapatra, in charge of the police station in the village. The 32-year-old victim, who is now married and has two children, alleged that her father first sexually exploited her when she was studying in Class 9 and continued to do so for years, threatening her with dire consequences if she complained to anyone.

“Though my father later married me off to a poor man, he wanted my husband and me to stay at his home so that he could exploit me further,” the victims said in her complaint. “She also alleged that she was forced to undergo many abortions by her father in the past,” Mohapatra told IANS.

NEW DELHI(Xinhua) — A nine-year-old Indian boy has become the country’s youngest person to be charged with rape after he was booked by police for the alleged rape of a six-year-old girl by violent assault, reported the Times of India electronic edition Wednesday.

However, the accused, whose name was not revealed for security reasons, was granted bail by a juvenile court in Himachal Pradesh, northern India, after spending a night in a police lockup this week, said the report. The children have known each other in school in Indora, Himachal Pradesh, and used to play together. On Sunday, they were playing at the girl’s residence while their parents were out for work, when the boy assaulted her. A medical examination of the victim and the accused confirmed rape, according to the report.

A court in India has convicted two members of the presidential bodyguard of raping a teenage university student six years ago. The attack on the 17-year-old student in 2003, sparked outrage across India, as it involved members of an elite unit at the presidential palace in New Delhi.

The two soldiers could be imprisoned for life.The New Delhi court also convicted two other presidential bodyguards of abducting and robbing the student, who was assaulted in a city park in broad daylight.

Experts at the New Zealand-based University of Wellington found that 47 per cent of men first gaze at the breasts, while another third at a woman’s waist or hips. “Eighty per cent of first fixations were on the breasts and midriff. Men spent consistently more time looking at the breasts and also made significantly more fixations upon them than other regions,” the Sun quoted the study as saying.Interestingly, less than 20 per cent met the woman’s eye while looking at her face. Scientists believe: “Men may be looking more often at the breasts because they are simply aesthetically pleasing, regardless of the size.”

March 26 .  Indian police have arrested a politician of the  hindu  extremist organization,  Baratiya Janata Party (BJP) in the northwestern province of Punjab for a second Friztl-like incest crime discovered in one week in the country, in which the man allegedly raped his 20-year-old daughter in the past eight years, said police Thursday. Ashok Taneja, the general secretary of a local unit of the BJP in Punjab, where the BJP is a partner in the state’s Akali Dal-ledruling alliance, was arrested after his daughter filed a charge against him Wednesday.

The girl, who is a college student, told police that she mustered enough courage to charge his father for sexual abuse after seeing a similar case in Mumbai, where a businessman was arrested for raping his daughter last week.

The Superintendent of Police of Amritsar, the state capital of Punjab, Satpal Joshi, told the media a case of rape has been registered against the accused.

Taneja had threatened to kill her daughter if she told anyone about the sexual abuse, he said, adding investigate is going on about whether any one of the girl’s family members, including her mother, knew about the rape.

Last week, Mumbai police arrested a 49-year-old businessman who allegedly raped his daughter for nine years on the advice of a yoga master that he could get rich quickly by having sexual relations with his daughter.

She covered up the act of this incest father for so long iin order that he becomes rich. Not only that the father and mother duo even allowed the ‘tantrik’ to rape their another teenage daughter. Both cases are similar to that of Joseph Fritzl in Austria, who got life sentence recently for imprisoning, raping and forcing his daughter to give birth to six children for him.

Indian Girls in Bangladesh

Sept. 4: The flow has changed. Poor Indian girls are now being lured into Bangladesh for prostitution. Cellphones or even something as basic as a radio set are being used to lure these girls across the border.

Lured by a cellphone, this 16-year-old tribal girl Anna (name changed) from Pakur district in Jharkhand, is one such victim.

She was rescued from across the border area between India and Bangladesh. Recounting the incident, this girl from Moglaband village, said, “He (the middleman) told me that I can buy a cellphone and a wristwatch, just like he was wearing. All I had to do was to work in a big house.”
The middleman from a nearby village even convinced her parents, telling them stories of prosperity gained by other girls.

“He took me in a truck near bada (wired fence). He told me that I should crouch in a corner of the truck, which was filled with stones (Pakur’s famous black stone). At dusk, we both managed to reach near bada and kept waiting there by hiding in the overgrown bushes. Later in the night, we both crossed the bada without being noticed by the uniformed men (BSF personnel),” said the rescued girl.

She said the man asked her to sit quietly. This Santhali girl, whose parents were “too happy” to know that their daughter is going to “earn” money for the family, did not even bother to verify the credentials of the man who persuaded them that there is enough money outside the village.

But even before Anna could fulfil her parents dream of earning money, they were “arrested” by anti-trafficking network officials and taken back to the uniformed men (Border Security Force), who “took away the middleman”.

“When we tried to explain her parents that their girl was being trafficked, they refused to listen to us. Fearing that the girl might be trafficked again, we admitted her in a centre, where she is living and studying with other rescued girls,” said Sanjay Kumar of an anti-trafficking network working in the Pakur area.

Forget long walks and calorie-controlled diets, the sure shot way to live a longer life is: get a second wife.

That’s the conclusion of a new research, which has suggested that men from polygamous cultures outlive those from monogamous ones.

After accounting for socioeconomic differences, men aged over 60 from 140 countries that practice polygamy to varying degrees lived on average 12 per cent longer than men from 49 mostly monogamous nations, says Virpi Lummaa, an ecologist at the University of Sheffield, UK.

The latest research might solve a long-standing puzzle in human biology: Why do men live so long? This question only makes sense after asking the same for women, who – unlike nearly all other animals – live long past the menopause.

One answer seems to be a phenomenon called the grandmother effect. For every 10 years a woman survives past the menopause, she gains two additional grandchildren, Lummaa says.

It seems that doting on and spoiling grandchildren aids their survival, as well as furthering some of their grandmother’s genes. Men, by contrast, can reproduce well into their 60s and even 70s and 80s, and most researchers assumed this explained their longevity.

But Lummaa and colleague Andy Russell wondered whether other factors explained the long lifespan of men, such as a grandfather effect.

To test this possibility, the team analysed church-gathered records for 25,000 Finns from the 18th and 19th centuries.

People tended to move little, no one practiced contraception and the Lutheran Church enforced monogamy. Only widowed men could remarry, and if they had children with their new wife, they fathered more kids, on average, than men who married once.

But ultimately remarried men “don’t end up with any more grandchildren,” Lummaa says.
