In a sensational disclosure of 2004, noted Tamil writer Anuradha Ramanan has alleged that Hindu pontiff, Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati attempted to sexually abuse her in 1992. He was arrested with his junior, Vijayendra Saraswati in their alleged involvement in Shankara Raman murder case. The matter is still pending before the court. As many as 24 people are accused in the case which pertains to the murder of the manager of Varadaraja Perumal temple in Kanchipuram.

While the Hindu seer dated more with RSS boys, his behavior may just tip the scales to classify him as a sex addict. RSS don’t promote marriage and sexual intercourse as a concept to build a family. Instead they believe in Sangh Parivar, the brotherhood of Hindu extremism and the front end leaders are compelled to live as bachelors in public life.

In December 2006, BJP general secretary and RSS insider Sanjay Joshi quit his party post after an audio cassette, and later a VCD, showing him in a compromising position with a woman. RSS always claims of Brahmacharya (vow of celibacy) about their leaders and members. Joshi, like all other members of RSS, is supposed to be celibate and the CD has exposed these claims.

In April 2007, Jayalakshmi, a nurse from Bangalore attempted suicide following endless sexual harassment by M P Renukacharya, a Hindu extremist party (BJP) legislator and the Chairman of the Karnataka State Electronics Development Corporation Ltd. She later released the pictures and videos of the sexual assault in front of the media.

In the same period , a quantity of locally-made Viagra and sex stimulants were recovered from the baggage of a senior Parliament Member of BJP. Babubhai Katara was arrested at Delhi airport for trying to fly with a woman and teenager to Toronto on the diplomatic passports of his family. He was arrested with one Paramjeet Kaur and a 15-year-old boy, Amarjeet Singh, who were posing as his wife and son.

According to specialists, sex addiction can involve a wide variety of practices. A large number of sex addicts say their unacceptable sexual practices have been the result of a gradual process.

It may have started with an unhealthy relationship, but over the years deteriorated to include compulsive behaviour which is frequently damaging.

Psychologist Sujendra Prakash says he’s come across several cases of happily married men who are addicted to sex. “They are rarely caught,”he says. “This may be because they are not celebrities, but social restrictions in our society mean that much is kept under wraps.”

According to him, “Those who display such behaviour are highly insecure people, mostly uncertain of their potency. They are are not good in bed. They indulge in promiscuous sexual activity to keep proving themselves. Their life is a lie and they lie to everybody. It is just like any other personality disorder and cannot be easily overcome.”

Experts also feel that sex addicts gain very little pleasure from actual physical contact. Yet they engage in sexual activities they don’t enjoy because they are trying to alter their own mood, and to anaesthetise painful feelings of low self-esteem or loneliness. “In our society, sex addicts are forced to wear a mask; they may appear harmless, but a lot is going on in their minds,”explains counsellor Ian Faria.

On whether this is a only male pre-occupation, Sujendra Prakash says, “Nymphomania exists more in literature than in the real world. While men are addicted to sex, women are addicted to love. But there are women who are aware that sex is a weak point for men and may use this to their advantage.”

As for solutions, psychologist Karun Mathews says, “Intense counsellings and sessions with psychologists or psychiatrists is recommended.

In the west, Sex Addicts Anonymous, based on the template of Alcoholics Anonymous, has been doing some amazing work.”But unlike alcohol or drug addiction, where the ‘just say no’ mantra is clear-cut, recovering from sexual addiction is not so straightforward.

Two Indian presidential bodyguards convicted of rape

A court in India has convicted two members of the presidential bodyguard of raping a teenage university student six years ago. The attack on the 17-year-old student in 2003, sparked outrage across India, as it involved members of an elite unit at the presidential palace in New Delhi.

The two soldiers could be imprisoned for life.The New Delhi court also convicted two other presidential bodyguards of abducting and robbing the student, who was assaulted in a city park in broad daylight.

Hindu extremists find salvation in incest

March 26 .  Indian police have arrested a politician of the  hindu  extremist organization,  Baratiya Janata Party (BJP) in the northwestern province of Punjab for a second Friztl-like incest crime discovered in one week in the country, in which the man allegedly raped his 20-year-old daughter in the past eight years, said police Thursday.

 

US Hindu Leader charged with groping underage girls

Prakashanand Saraswati accused of 20 counts of indecency with a child.

The founder of the Barsana Dham Hindu temple in Hays County has been arrested in Washington, D.C., after being accused of groping two underage girls on several occasions in the 1990s.

Prakashanand Saraswati, 79, was taken into custody by U.S. marshals Thursday afternoon. Saraswati is in custody in Alexandria, Va., according to the Hays County sheriff’s office.

New Delhi: Orissa Assembly Speaker Maheshwar Mohanty is in trouble. An FIR has been filed against him for allegedly sexually harassing a woman marshall in Assembly.

Twenty-nine-year-old Gayatri Panda on Wednesday alleged Mohanty used to call her to his chamber alone and even sent a car to her place late in the night. Panda also says the Speaker, who was aware she was unmarried, used to make lewd gestures at her.

An unseemly controversy has broken out at the 185-year-old Oxford University, with the president-elect of the students union, Krishna Omkar, being disqualified soon after he had won the poll.

Omkar, 23, of Merton College, originally from Delhi, was removed following allegations that he had violated campaign rules. His chief opponent, 21-year-old Charlotte Fischer of Balliol, charged him with sexually harassing her, apart from engaging in electoral malpractices.

Fischer claimed that union office bearers, at the instance of Omkar, who was treasurer in last year’s union, had sent her filthy SMSs. She also said Omkar had held a meeting of around 30 people, on the eve of the poll, to canvass for votes, which was against union rules.

Omkar was stripped of his position by a university tribunal which investigated Fischer’s allegations. A fresh election has been ordered. Fischer, who was expecting to be named president by default after Omkar was removed, walked out of the tribunal’s meeting room in a huff. She too has been criticised for bringing along a London barrister to represent her at the hearing – unheard of in Oxford elections earlier.

The matter is not over yet since Omkar has gone in appeal, which will be heard next month.

Campus gossip has it that Omkar and Fischer were till recently close friends. Fischer called Omkar ‘my love’, while he reciprocated with  ‘my gorgeous surfer girl’ in exchanges on Facebook. But they fell out over an invitation sent out last November to Nick Griffin, leader of the right wing British National Party, and David Irving, a arch conservative historian to address the students. While Omkar believed these men had a right to be heard even at Oxford, Fischer, who is Jewish, wanted the invitations to them withdrawn.  A huge fracas broke out when Griffin and Irving arrived on campus, and police had to be called. Fischer has been quoted as saying that she accused Omkar ‘with a heavy heart’ because she hated to see the union being brought into disrepute and ‘weakened by perceived corruption’. She explained that she brought a barrister along “because of the viciousness of the attacks against me”.

The Times quoted Omkar’s defence: “I have been punished for doing something most other presidents have also done. I held a meeting of 30 people. It was not a party. There was no alcohol present. I had no idea Charlotte had been getting these text messages until I read her resignation letter.”

“There is a lot of tension,” said a union insider. “Krishna is considered by some of us as rather brash. But Charlotte’s decision to call a tribunal and bring in a barrister is seen as unsporting. But both are ambitious and there is a lot at stake.”

Omkar is the second ‘foreign origin student’ to have been elected president, the first being Akash Maharaj in 1993.

Swiss tourist raped at Holy Hindu city of Pushkar, Rajasthan

Jaipur: In the second such incident in Hindu right wing ruled state of Rajasthan,  in less than a month, a Swiss tourist was allegedly raped in the holy town of Pushkar by the owner of a hotel.

The 37-year-old tourist has alleged she was raped by Nanu Rawat, owner of Nanu Garden Restaurant, in Pushkar in Ajmer district, a week ago.

In her first information report filed with the Pushkar police station on Saturday, she alleged that Rawat raped her in one of his hotel rooms in front of her friend. The police have arrested the hotel owner.

“We arrested the man on Saturday after a complaint was filed by the Swiss tourist,” a police official said yesterday.

Earlier this month, a US tourist had alleged that she was molested by a priest at a Hindu temple in Pushkar.

The tourist, hailing from Oregon in the United States, had come for pilgrimage to the city.

On December 23 last year, a British journalist had alleged that she was raped by the owner of a guest house in Udaipur

 

HIV women forced into sex for treatment in India: report

NEW DELHI (AFP) — HIV-positive women in the northern Indian state of Punjab were forced by technicians at a medical institute to have sex in return for tests and medicines, a report said Saturday.

Police were investigating the allegations against employees of the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in state capital Chandigarh, the Times of India said.

The women who complained of abuse were mainly young patients from city slums.

“I was helped by a technician there. He provided me medicines and other testing facilities without any problem,” a 27-year-old widow who was diagnosed with HIV in 2005 told the paper.

“But this was all for his sexual gratification.

The woman said she was also asked to procure other girls for workers at the institute’s AIDS testing and counselling centre.

Stigma and discrimination against HIV-positive people are widespread in the country of 1.1 billion people, where an estimated 2.5 million people are infected with the virus, according to the United Nations.

The number of estimated AIDS cases in India came down sharply this year from estimates of 5.7 million cases in 2005, reflecting an increase in testing and better statistical sampling methods, the UN said.
